Each year we have a water festival to celebrate the water we have in the valley. Here is a great diary entry:
Dear Diary,
Wow, what a day I had! Today was my first of hopefully many more water festivals and I mean the village went full out.
My day started out nice and early even though I wanted to sleep in so I had loads of energy for later however I have three gorgeous horses to look after. I woke up greeted by the sun sneaking its way in, perfect weather for the festival. Lazily making my way downstairs I was to see Milo and Spike (my dogs) waiting in anticipation for my arrival. Perhaps they knew that is was a big day? As per usual Lola was still sleeping, snoring her head off. On the way back from the stables my mind was racing with loads of ideas about what would happen at the festival.
At 10am I started making my way to the river already in my brand new dress bought especially for the occasion. As I got closer and closer so did the music. My first impression was speechless and it made me remember why I moved here in the first place. All around was covered in decorations in bright and pastel colours. Everybody was gathered in their grandest clothes and every outfit was topped off with a smile.
The festival began with a display from groups of family and friends. My group consisted of Ellie, Issy Simson, Libby Fay and April White and together we created a fun dance that got everyone cheering and laughing.
Impressed by everyone’s performance it was time for the ceremony in honour of our precious river. Silence fell over us all as an elder from another village sat down on the green grass carrying the sacred bowl. “Our ancestors have told us remember the water it is precious.” Slowly and gradually the bowl made its way around the circle, each person repeating these words then taking a drink and then passing it on. All the way round I was so nervous that I might forget the words however that did not happen and I was so relieved when my turn was over. That was the serious part of the festival over.
This was the part I had been waiting for, the parade. The samba music started going and so did the party. Within no time everyone was up on their feet dancing in a massive line all the way around the village. I felt so happy and care free, it was just the best. By the time we made it back to our starting place everyone was exhausted and I was so hungry but luckily it was time for the feast.
There was so much lovely and delicious food but unfortunately I couldn’t try everything. I have to say that Mary McButterworth’s soup is super good. After we had all eaten loads of people came back to ours for a party. I think it was the best one I’ve ever had!
Today was an awesome day but I’m really tired. I’ll write soon.
Bye,
Zoe
